OIL - YUK and YUK

You see I don't particularly like using oils, but boss teacher wanted us to do a still life in oils. Yuk and yuk! Not struck on painting in oils nor ordinary still life.  But like a good little girl I did as I was told (this time) Outcome not as bad as I thought. These are water soluble oils.

This was done over two weeks classes.  Patience I didn't know I had, as I like to go whoosh and have a painting done in one session, if possible.  Oh and the round pot didn't have a square opening,  this huge error has only come to light looking at it on screen.  Won't be altering it though, as this will go in my 'not like' box.

Will I use oils at our last class this year,  or will I rebel?

Have a wondrous weekend!

  1. Well the painting is lovely Polly but I get what you are saying about wanting the painting done in a session... me too!! I tried acrylics many years ago and was actually better at them than watercolours but had another go recently with a friend of mine who is a whizz with them and I was rubbish!! Kept adding too much water and got a muddy mess so you have done wonderfully well with this and I rather like the square hole!!

    1. Oh Judith thanks for the encouragement. My heart lies in w/c and brusho. I see my friends paint beautiful things in oils but I prefer the excitement and unpredictability and speed of other media, even though you are more prone to failure. Have a lovely Sunday.

  3. It certainly shows your versatility as an artist Polly, I would never have looked at the square hole just admired your work as a lovely painting.

  5. Hi, Polly, let's celebrate your achievement first. Quite good!! Regarding medium option, try BOTH, if you have questions. Some artists are multi medium users. I once did oil and came back to watercolour. Just enjoy it!
    Best wishes, Sadami

    1. My heart is in watercolour but sometimes it is good to challenge yourself and have a change. I kind of enjoyed it but was glad when it was finished

    1. I find it interesting that you got a watercolour feel. Perhaps this is a good thing. Probably be a while before a paint in oils again. Ooops I tell a lie I am trying to paint The Fighting Temeraire.

  7. Your painting is wonderful! I do know what you mean though, the frustration of switching media, it's hard to do. Yet you were able to retain bright, clear color, even with oil. Well done!

    1. I did try to not make it muddy. Perhaps it has worked. Thank you for your comments.

  8. Beautiful colors in this oil. It's seems to me (from my screen) that you have used oil like watercolor and keep the intensity of this médium, no mud. So, good job :)))

    1. Thank you Lydie. You too see my painting with a watercolour influence. Perhaps this is the only way I can use oils.

  9. You sound like me... sometimes I resist instruction and just really want to do things my own way... but I have to keep reminding myself that I signed up for the class to learn about what this person does, so I should do what he/she is telling me to do, at least for the time I'm there. Your painting is wonderful! I like the flow of hte composition and the pure colors.

    1. Yes, that is me. What is the point of going to a class that you are paying for and not listen to advice. And thank you for your kind words too.
